Camp Custer Motel was built in 1927, east of Hardin on the old "Custer Highway" by Jake and Pearl Linthacum. The facility featured all the modern conveniences: four small cabins, office and restaurant combination, and a washroom/shower house.

Eventually more buildings were added, until there were fourteen cabins.

The original cabins were donated and moved to the museum in 2001. The restoration was made possible by the financial contribution of Darrell and Donnel Linthacum, the twin sons of Pearl and Jake.
